Spyware - Protection & Prevention
Spyware has been around for a long time, in fact the first recorded use of the term was way back as early as 1995 in a Usenext post. It's intended meaning at that time was marginally different and didn't take on it's current meaning until about 2000 when Gregor Freund, the founder of "zone Labs, referred to it in a press release. Malware has become a major problem causing varying levels of problems to online commercial enterprises, government agencies, and the home computer user. Surveys carried out in 2005 reported that 61% of people that participated in the survey had some type of malware on their system and 92% were not aware that it had gotten onto their system. Due to the media attention given to data theft and credit card fraud, we would hope that most people would now be more aware of the dangers that could result from having poor internet security. Although as recently as 2006, Webroot, the manufacturers of Spy Sweeper, estimated that nine out of ten systems connected to the net are infected with some form of adware. Some might say that Microsofts operating system and more specifically Internet explorer, had a big part to play in the problem. The root cause of this was most likely the ActiveX issue? Microsoft browsers prior to Internet Explorer 7 would simply display an installation window and most end-users would go ahead and install it, naively thinking they were making the right choice. This should have been anticipated by the programmers, and Speaking of naivety? Coding IE (Internet Explorer) in such a way that makes the assumption, "all ActiveX installs are harmless" doesn't scream, "expert' either! What Can Spyware Do? It really depends on exactly what form of spyware you have on your system? It can do everything from collect data on your surfing habits,(what websites you visit) it can install additional nuisance software, redirect your web browser to sites that could install other harmful viruses, and change your computer settings. As a result, a massive industry has now sprung up catering to online security prevention and protection. At least there is now plenty to choose from when making your spyware scanner purchase, too much some would say? As usual there are good products, not so good products and, "rogue spyware products?" Rogue spyware is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of cleaning or protecting your home or office computer, it will actually infect it with some form of malware. It would be safer sticking to one of the better known companies like, Sunbelt software, the makers of Counterspy or Webroots Spy Sweeper. There are others out there and everyone has their favorite. Whatever one you choose, choose carefully! An infected PC could cause anything from mild annoyance to identity theft and havoc. Spyware is a serious issue, treat it as such and lock down your PC with the best spyware protection you can find and afford.
