Net Nanny Review
At fix-this-computer.com we pride ourselves on reviewing the latest software parents can use in the fight to protect their children online. One of the industies leading pieces of software in the battle to protect kids online has been Net Nanny. So we thought it only right to give the latest version a through review. Lets start by taking a look at what’s new on the latest version of Net Nanny.
Net Nanny New Features
On the latest version of Net Nanny there are a couple of new features. The first of which is the ability to create a custom list of blocked applications. This feature seems to work well and is very useful if you don’t want your kid using things like MSN messenger when your not around. The second significant feature is e-mail content filtering, we tried this out but as is often the case with e-mail filtering we found it to be a little over sensitive. Although I am sure if you put that to Net Nanny they would point out that its generally better to err on the side of caution when it comes protecting your kids.
Other Features of Net Nanny
For those of you who haven’t already used a previous version of Net Nanny lets run through some of the features:
· Remote Management and Reporting – Means you don’t have to use your kids computer to check what they have been up to.
· Contextual Content Filtering – This is the same kind of technology those clever folks at Goggle use to serve up adverts this allow Net Nanny bases to block the or not depending on the current content of the site. This is way more effective than other systems when it comes to filtering things like news sites where the information changes throughout the day.
· Password Override- This feature allows you to override a blocked site instantly if you know the password, this of cause saves you the hassle of changing setting when you use the net.
· E-mail Notifications – You can get an E-mail alert when your child tries to access objectionable content. This means even when you’re at work or anywhere in the world you can monitor and protect your child online.
What’s Net Nanny Like To Use?
Net Nanny is easy to set up and manage but you may find it reduces the speed you can access the Internet. The reason for this is that Net Nanny scans all the content prior to showing it to the user. This wont be a problem for most people but if your Internet connection is slow (below 1 Meg) I would avoid using Net Nanny.
The Bottom Line on Net Nanny
Net Nanny is a good bit of software which does a good job its content filtering can sometimes be a little to protective but this is largely overcome when an adult uses the computer due to its password system. The remote access system gives Net Nanny an edge over a lot of the competition and helps make it a great package for protecting you kids online.

Net Nanny Review SummaryNet Nanny is a good product for blocking your children from accessing unsuitable content and thus insuring they use the Internet safely it also allows you to block applications and can let you know via e-mail every time your child tries to access blocked content. It reads the content of a site rather than just blocking sites from a database which means it's always up to date. You can buy Net Nanny from the makers site for $29.99 (usually $39.99) |
Want To Monitor Your Teenagers? While the Net Nanny product caters for children buy blocking adult content if you have teenagers you may wish to just keep any eye on them without angering them by blocking things if this is the case the market leader in stealth monitoring technology aimed at kids is PC Tattle Tale which is reviewed here. |
